You and your mentor may decide what you want to work on together from the onset. But remember to set goals and expectations at the beginning of your relationship with our Mentoring Agreement as a guide. If you need some ideas on what to do with your mentor to achieve the goals you set, the list below is a great place to start.

Career Conversations

• Ask your mentor about his/her educational background and the role of educational preparation in your field of interest
• Inquire about a current event or issue in your field of interest
• Schedule a workplace shadowing visit during a university break period, if appropriate

Learn your Mentor’s Story

• Ask your mentor what he/she would do differently in his/her time at university
• Find out how your mentor has dealt with personal or professional challenges
• Inquire how your mentor has balanced personal life and career and what to expect

Networking Pursuits

• Attend a professional meeting or conference with your mentor
• Learn how to conduct an informational interview
• Ask your mentor to introduce you to colleagues or contacts in your field of interest

Postgraduate Study Consultations

• Ask what your mentor learned about navigating his/her postgraduate studies
• Discuss how your mentor worked with his/her advisors

• Ask to see your mentor's resume to learn about their career history - and ask for their advice on developing yours
