If you need some ideas on what to do with your mentor to achieve the goals you set, the list below is a great place to start.
Career Conversations
- Ask your mentor about his/her educational background and the role of educational preparation in your field of interest
- Inquire about a current event or issue in your field of interest
- Schedule a workplace shadowing visit during a university break period, if appropriate
Learn your Mentor’s Story
- Ask your mentor what he/she would do differently in his/her time at university
- Find out how your mentor has dealt with personal or professional challenges
- Inquire how your mentor has balanced personal life and career and what to expect
Networking Pursuits
- Attend a professional meeting or conference with your mentor
- Learn how to conduct an informational interview
- Ask your mentor to introduce you to colleagues or contacts in your field of interest
Postgraduate Study Consultations
- Ask what your mentor learned about navigating his/her postgraduate studies
